PRESS RELEASE
71st Art Auction
2nd & 3rd December 2008
Our December anniversary auction – 15 years' im Kinsky – is also a celebration of Austrian art at its finest. Klimt, Kolig, Kokoschka, Sedlacek, Lassnig, Nitsch, Rainer and Wotruba are just some of the names to be called at this auction. With a high quality selection of top works from Austrian representatives of classical modernism, contemporary art and Jugendstil, im Kinsky offers an exciting and broad spectrum of around 500 art objects with an estimated total value of 4.6 to 8 million Euros.
CLASSIC MODERNISM
The pace is set by four studies by Gustav Klimt. The "Dancer" from the "Expectation" panel of the Stoclet frieze, one of his most exquisite drawings from this period, is estimated by experts at € 80,000 - 150,000. Uplifting and eye-catching motifs appear in the landscapes by Franz Sedlacek, whose works were displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York as early as 1930. This significant artist who masters the crossover between realism and fantastic styles is represented at im Kinsky by three paintings. The "Landscape with burning citadel" (€ 80,000 - 150,000) dated 1939, c
omes from the artist's estate. A highlight of Anton Kolig's later work are his allegorical and colour-intensive compositions, such as in the first piece, "Unsere Jugend" (€ 50,000 – 100,000), painted three years before his death. Other classical modernists such as Alfons Walde and "Die Kirche in Kitzbühel" (€ 40,000 - 60,000), Oskar Kokoschka with the "Frau mit Katze" (€ 40,000 - 70,000), Alfred Wickenburg's "Brücke am Arno" (€ 50,000 - 100,000) and Josef Dobrowsky with "Blumen in Krug"
(€ 20,000 - 40,000) are just some of the prominent Austrian protagonists at this auction.
CONTEMPORARY ART
A woman, one of the most significant Austrian female artists, is at the centre of contemporary art. Maria Lassnig, whose entire works involve the theme of self-projection, reflects in "Innerhalb - Außerhalb" (€ 100,000 - 180,000) on painting oneself and captivates within the picture the artist's figure outside the painting. A masterly achievement is Fritz Wotruba's representation in stone of clarity and simplicity. His "Sitzender" (€ 80,000 - 150,000) is one of the many highlights of the evening, along with "Schüttbild mit Malhemd" (€ 70,000 - 110,000) by Hermann Nitsch.
This
most prominent representative of Viennese actionism still divides the nation in their opinion of his work, while his quality maintains a continuity underlined by the fact that he is displayed at the most important museums around the world. More excitement is on the cards at his auction when other great names in Austrian art are called, like Arnulf Rainer, Helmut Leherb, Franz Ringel, Max Weiler, Bruno Gironcoli, Alfred Hrdlicka, not forgetting Xenia Hausner's "Eine Künstlerehe"
(€ 30,000 - 50,000).
JUGENDSTIL
Im Kinsky offers Jugendstil collectors and enthusiasts an amazing array of artists and art objects on 3rd December - timeless in both aesthetics and value. The Table piece
(€ 18,000 - 25,000) is rated as a highlight of Josef Hoffmann's work and his form is a notable synthesis of his later style and the work of Dagobert Peche for
the Wiener Werkstätte. From Peche himself, who was one of the directors of the Wiener Werkstätte in 1916, there is a Chest (€ 25,000 - 50,000) and Mirror (€ 16,000 - 30,000) up for auction.
A "Floral column" (€ 18,000 – 35,000) by Otto Prutscher is also expected to attract special interest thanks to its exquisite shape and the materials applied.
Other high value Jugendstil objects from the workshops of Hagenauer, Daum, the Wiener Werkstätte, and the famous vases produced by Lötz as well as selected pieces by Emile Gallé are all to be had in this anniversary auction.
